Math Studies SL Objectives

UNIT 1 – Number Systems and Scientific Notation

1.1            SWBAT… Classify and compare number systems: N, Z, Q, R, I, C.           

1.2            SWBAT… Use approximations: decimal places, significant figures, and percentage errors to verify that solutions are reasonable.                                               

1.3            SWBAT… Express numbers in the form a x 10k where 1≤a<10 and k is an integer and perform operations utilizing these numbers.                                               

1.4            SWBAT… Convert between different units including SI and other basic units of measurement

1.5            SWBAT… Perform currency transactions involving commission

 

UNIT 2 & 3 – Sets and Logic

3.1            SWBAT… Express ideas using the basic concepts of symbolic logic, know the definition of a proposition and how to express it symbolically

3.2            SWBAT… Use compound statements: implication; equivalence; negation; conjunction; disjunction; exclusive disjunction and be able to translate between verbal statements and symbolic form.

3.3            SWBAT… Test statements using truth tables, including the concepts of logical contradiction and tautology.

3.4            SWBAT… Use Converse, Inverse, Contrapositive, Logical Equivalence and test their validity using truth tables.

3.5A          SWBAT…  Utilize basic concepts of set theory: subsets, intersection, union, and complement.                                               

3.5B          SWBAT… Perform simple application using Venn Diagrams

3.6            SWBAT… Understand sample space: event, A and its complementary event A’.

 

UNIT 4 – Functions

1.6            SWBAT…  Use calculator to solve linear equations in two variables and quadratic equations

6.1            SWBAT… Interpret a function as a mathematical model and determine domain and range.

6.2            SWBAT… Create linear functions and their graphs.

6.3            SWBAT… Create quadratic models and their graphs.  Properties of quadratics including: symmetry, vertex, x & y – intercepts.

6.6            SWBAT… Ability to accurately create graphs, sketch graphs from provided information, and interpreting graphs including for addition and subtraction of functions.

6.7            SWBAT… Use calculator to solve equations involving any combination of function types.

 

UNIT 5 – Discrete Statistics

2.1      SWBAT…  Classify data as discrete or continuous

2.2      SWBAT…  Simple discrete data: frequency tables

2.3      SWBAT…  Grouped discrete or continuous data, frequency tables for grouped data, cumulative frequency curves, median and quartiles, box-and-whisker diagram.

2.4      SWBAT…  Cumulative frequency tables for grouped discrete data and for grouped continuous data; cumulative frequency curves, median and quartiles

2.5      SWBAT…  Measure of central tendency: mean, median, mode, estimate of a mean, modal class.

2.6      SWBAT…  Measures of dispersion: range, interquartile range, standard deviation

 

UNIT 6 – Applied Statistics

4.1      SWBAT…  Normal distribution, random variable, diagrammatic representation, probability calculations, expected value, inverse normal.

4.2      SWBAT…  Bivariate data and correlation, scatter diagrams (best fit, eye test, mean point), Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r), interpretation of +,0,-,strong, weak correlation.

4.3      SWBAT…  Regression line for y on x, use regression line to make predictions.

 

UNIT 7 – Discrete Statistics

4.4      SWBAT…  Use the x2 test (Chi squared test) for independence, formulation of null and alternative hypotheses, significance levels, congruency tables, expected frequencies, degrees of freedom, p-values
